Training in the management of cytotoxic breakage through simulation: a team challenge

The International Society of Oncology Pharmacy Practitioners guidelines recommend having standard operating procedures and simulation training programs for production operators on the management of accidental cytotoxic spills. The objective of this workshop is to introduce the concept of learning through simulation using a simulated scenario of cytotoxic vial breakage initially established at the University Hospitals of Geneva. After a brief reminder on the use of edutainment and simulation in the field of hospital production, the room will be separated into two teams invited to challenge each other through simulation. Each team will have to advance along the 4 main stages of management of cytotoxic vial breakage (isolation of the area, individual protection, cleaning, elimination of waste) going as quickly as possible to ensure their safety but while doing as little as possible. possible errors. To do this, collaborative work will be fundamental because each error will cost the team a penalty. The debriefing will be followed by an awards ceremony. To complete this workshop, the results of a study which evaluated the impact of this simulation training program on operators’ satisfaction, knowledge and performance in real professional practice will be presented. These results will be accompanied by a discussion on the means of transposing this concept to other hospitals and for subjects other than that of the management of cytotoxic vial breakage.
