The revised version of the German Ordinance on the Operation of Pharmacies (ApBetrO) in late 2012 was associated with a number of changes regarding drug preparation and quality control of the products in daily pharmacy practice. In consequence guidelines of the professional societies were updated, e.g. the ADKA-Guideline arranging the aseptic preparation of ready-to-use parenteral products. Regarding this specific topic (§ 35 ApBetrO) meanwhile also a Q&A catalogue was published by a working party of the German Pharmacy inspectorates. However there are still a number of unanswered questions and points to be considered. In the field of aseptic preparation this is especially true in terms of isolator technique and the preparation of admixtures for total parenteral nutrition (TPN) for paediatric patients. There is also need for discussion with regard to the quality control of batchwise prepared medicinal products in pharmacies and the preparation of solid oral medications which are dispensed as unit-dose or single-dose forms. The latter is regulated in § 34 ApBetrO and a revised version of the ADKA-Guideline ‚unit-dose‘ is currently under consultation in the German Society of Hospital Pharmacists. The released version of the unit-dose guideline as well as preselected frequently asked questions concerning aseptic preparation of parenterals will be discussed during the workshop. The aim of the workshop is to agree evidence–based answers, which will be published in the professional journal (Krankenhauspharmazie) of the German Society of Hospital Pharmacists.
