Autologous serum eye drops

Dr Lucie Bouchoud, Genève University Hospital, SwitzerlandAutologous serum eye drop is indicated for patients resistant to conventional treatment options and suffering from severe dry eye. The particularity of this treatment comes from the fact that the active pharmaceutical ingredient is the serum of the patient himself. The manufacture of this eye drop begins with a blood sample from the patient. Then, blood is coagulated and centrifuged so that the serum can be recovered. Next, the serum is used pure or diluted (20% to 80%) in an iso-osmolar saline solution. Autologous serum eye drop is packaged in eye drop bottles, generally multi-doses. To handle biological products in hospital pharmacies is not common and requires special considerations and to implement different means to protect patients, operators, and environment. Ensuring product stability throughout product use requires also special attention.
